How Well Does Your Management Team Perform?

Management Performance

Your management team’s performance matters – big time!  To determine how well they are performing doesn’t have to be a daunting task. It’s not hard to do. Simply consider these five areas.

1. Results: What results are your managers getting for the company? Is the sales manager increasing sales? Is the marketing department drawing new customers with highly creative marketing and advertising strategies (especially social media) and helping the sales team obtain qualified leads?  Is the GM or manufacturing manager producing quality products? Do they continuously streamline operations? Is the customer service manager creating loyal customers and advocates?

2. Employee Satisfaction: To determine the performance of your managers conduct a simple anonymous survey of the employees on their individual teams.  Ask these seven questions.

1. Does your manager make you feel valued and appreciated?

2. Does your manager spend time coaching you and helping you?

3. Does your manager ask for and listen to your opinion?

4. Does your manager promote teamwork, respect, and service excellence and do these critical aspects of a quality work environment exist on your team?

5. Does your manager consistently demonstrate the core values of your company?

6. Would you recommend working here to someone else?

7. How long you plan on staying with the company?

The teams’ answers will give you a clear picture of their individual manager’s performance in these areas.

3. Turnover Rate:  If a department or team has a high turnover rate you have a problem. If there is a high turnover rate, it may indicate the manager is in need or leadership training. And if your manager has already received leadership training but has not implemented the ideas, techniqes and skills they learned then it is an organizational failure. Do something about this and fast!

4. Emerging Leaders: Are there emerging leaders on the manager’s team?  Has the manager identified individuals with leadership potential that will be the individuals who will carry your organization into a successful future?  (Note: If the manager needs help, have them read this blog post —

Have they identified the individuals with leadership qualities and made sure they receive the mentoring and training they will need?

5. Productivity:Progressive companies use sophisticated performance management systems to determine the performance of their individual managers. If you want quick answers, you can keep it simple. Simply consider results, employee satisfaction, turnover rate whether there are emerging leaders on their teams and whether there is a high level of productivity.
